Inspiring the Next Generation to Take Action for a Cleaner, Plastic-Free Nigeria

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark World Environment Day 2025, the Development Initiative for Community Impact (DICI) took the lead at Ovwor Secondary School, Ovwor-Olomu, Ughelli South LGA, Delta State, Nigeria, with a passionate call to action: combat plastic pollution through youth empowerment and environmental education.

Plastic pollution, environmental experts warn, is one of the most pressing ecological threats facing the country. It not only disfigures landscapes and clogs drainage systems, but also endangers marine ecosystems and public health. The theme for this year’s global celebration—“Beat Plastic Pollution”—struck a chord with DICI, which organized an enlightenment campaign at Ovwor Secondary School to engage young minds on their role in building a plastic-free future.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Eba, a representative of DICI, emphasized that plastic waste has become a pervasive problem in both rural and urban communities across Nigeria. “Plastic pollution can lead to serious health issues such as endocrine disruption, infertility, and even cancer,” he said. “It also severely impacts wildlife and marine life. But if we work together, we can reverse this trend.”
Mr. Eba noted that recycling and reducing plastic consumption are key solutions. “By reducing our dependence on new raw materials and promoting reusable alternatives, we can limit the energy-intensive process of plastic production by up to 90% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25%,” he explained.

He added that DICI’s campaign targets young people deliberately, as they are vital to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. “They are the future of this country. Empowering them with knowledge and responsibility is the surest way to build a cleaner and healthier Nigeria.”
In a powerful contribution to the discussion, Mr. Frederick Ano, Assistant Director of Environmental Health, also underscored the pivotal role of youth. “Young people are naturally innovative. We are encouraging them to develop ideas for converting waste plastics into useful products. If we catch them young, we can achieve the clean environment we all desire,” he said.
The interactive session also featured remarks from the Principal and students of Ovwor Secondary School, who expressed gratitude to DICI for the impactful campaign. One student remarked, “Now we understand how dangerous plastic pollution is. I will educate my friends and family about keeping our environment clean.”

The event closed with a strong call for collective responsibility. From individuals and communities to governments and institutions, DICI urges all stakeholders to adopt sustainable waste management practices, reduce single-use plastics, and invest in innovations that transform waste into wealth.
As the world continues to confront the environmental challenges of our time, DICI remains committed to mobilizing local communities, especially youth—for positive action. This year’s World Environment Day may have come and gone, but the mission to beat plastic pollution is only just beginning.
